Possible Running Mates for Mitt Romney
March 27th, 2007 by eric
In my March 24, 2007 post titled My 2008 Prediction for the Republicans I mentioned Kay Bailey Hutchison as a possible running mate for Governor Romney should he win the Republican nomination. For those of you who do not know Kay Bailey Hutchison, she is the most senior female Republican Senator.
As I looked around on the net, I found a couple of other blogs tossing around ideas.
Here is the complete list of names suggested.
Many people put forward the name Condoleezza Rice, however I’m pretty sure I heard her say that she would not consider any offers.
Several others have put forward the name Jeb Bush. Jeb has also said that he would not consider an offer to become anyone’s running mate.
Orin Hatch
Condi Rice
Newt Gingrich
Jeb Bush
Rudy Giuliani
Mark Sanford
Mike Huckabee
Tom Tancredo
John McCain
Gordon Smith
Meg Whitman
John Huntsman
Lynn Swann
Matt Blunt

Most of these are slightly far fetched or just dont make sense but I like your support of Romney. So lets see:
-Hutchinson (no, read into her past, a lot of corruption issues)
-Hatch (no b/c it would be overtly mormon)
-Rice (you establish as no)
-Gingrich (if he wont enter as presidential candidate he wont enter as a vp either, he has a big ego)
-Jeb (no for obvious reasons other than saying he wont)
-Sanford (maybe but Romney might want someone that has strengths he doesnt have, plus he had some weird vote alliances with Ron Paul on restoring trade with Cuba)
-Mike Huckabee (horrible spending record in arkansas, does not fit romney’s pro growth mold but does fit his social mold)
-John Huntsman (Two mormons at one time might be too much)
-Tancredo (way too harsh on romney visa vi youtube, etc to become his VP in the end)
-Meg Whitman (ebay to VP, highly unlikely)
-Lynn Swann (nice thought but highly unlikely, maybe had he won in PA)
-Matt Blunt (has one of the worst approval ratings in the country, too young as well, hasnt even served a full term)
Here are a few of my predictions:
1. Jim Demint- non-mormon, already endorses mitt romney, solidly good on social issues (maybe a bit extreme), solidly good on pro-growth issues that romney advocates and wants to show he truly stands behind, comes from a good portion of the country (the south) that could help romney court evangelical conservatives.
2. Fred Thompson???? (probably not though, his last job beofre his tv gig was a lobbyist
3. Charlie Crist, he’s no jeb bush, but he doesnt carry the bush tag either. Hasnt been an elected official for long but was an attorney general in FL and prosecuted plenty of internet cases involing spam and child porn, etc. This plays into romney’s new Ocean theme. plus he’s really really popular in florida.
4.Mel Martinez (my pick)- insiders know that a lot of martinez’s fundraisers are the same ones as romney’s. moreover seeing as the dems pick could be a cultural first in politics(a woman, an african american, or a hispanic) this would show that republicans can be diverse too. Not to mention bush was able to get 40% of the hispanic vote in 04.
Let me know what you think.
the problem with all of these is that Romney will need a vp with strong foreign policy credentials, along with a southern or western background. The foreign policy is critical to maintain a strong advantage over the Dems (I see a strong foreign policy guy like a Biden as the Dem VP).
Other than McCain who i don’t see running, i can’t think of anyone obvious.
He could wim if he chose Condalisa Rice! Then Oprah would change her influence from Obama!
I would like to see Duncan Hunter as a Vice President with Mitt Romney, Duncan is a diamond in Rough Cut and Mitt is exactly what will put a polish on him. On the same token Duncan and Romney can hunt together,Duncan’s a straight shooter in more ways than one!
Too BAD GUILIANI IS SO PRO- Macain, That might have been a workable ticket………MacCAIN is TOOO
OLD to invest our hopes of change ,to set in his ways, and no matter what anyone sez, I know there must must be hidden residule effects from being held hostaGE IN A POW CAMP, AND WHO KNOWS WHAT CAN OR COULD CAUSE THIS BRAVE EX SOLIDER TO SNAP!
WITH GOOD REASON ,BUT NEVERTHELESS something ,or someone or situation is a trigger,
I suffer from PTSD,and I have triggers that I have to be vigilant about watching.
I was held against my will as well, and you never completely recover. As he gets older he is subseptible to elder- and inevitable medical
problems.
Combined with a POW trigger, this is not a reassuring situation, and I can’t in all good con-
sciece sit quietly and allow my party to make this mistake.
