Spartanburg County Straw Poll Results Not Good for Romney
March 5th, 2007 by eric
Here are the final results for the Spartanburg Conty Straw Poll held Thursday, March 1, 2007. After they finished counting all ballots on the afternoon of March 2nd, Senator John McCain came out on top with 164 votes.
164 McCain
162 Giuliani
158 Hunter
85 Brownback
80 Romney
21 Huckabee
Instead of the “less than 2,000″ atendees, the Associated Press reported turnout at about 800. The low turnout was due to severe weather.
The Spartanburg County straw poll is an early event that will guage a candidates strength and campaign efectiveness.
Despite the positive spin that was quoted in my previous post by the Romney camp, “Romney’s campaign said they were pleased…” they couldn’t have been pleased. In all of the major polls leading up to this event, Mitt Romney is polling in third behind only McCain and Giuliani. Sometimes Mitt Romney is polling fourth when Newt Gingrich (who is not officially running) polls third. For Mitt Romney to come in fifth place in this straw poll must have been disappointing. It reflects that we have a lot of work to do in South Carolina among their conservative voters. The good thing is- there’s still plenty of time.
