Is Mitt Romney Conservative Enough?

Mitt Romney hopes to corral the support of the conservative right wing of the Republican party. But can he accomplish it? Will he have the support of this group in its entirety? In my conversations recently with conservative Republicans, I have heard people express doubt and skepticism that he will win the support of the entire group. Even some of Mitt’s fellow mormons are unsure if he is the moral right wing conservative that they are looking for.

Meanwhile, John McCain has tried to cast himself as the prominant conservative candidate while publicizing quotes from Mitt Romney’s past that cast Romney as a more liberal Republican. Other Republicans have seen a void, or an opening, -an opportunity to present themselves as “the” conservative candidate, a void left open by the demise of conservative frontrunner Senator George Allen. Republican Senator Sam Brownback announced that he is launching a bid for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination saying, “there is a need for genuine conservatism”.

James S. Gilmore III, a former Virginia governor and chairman of the Republican National Committee, announced… that he would form a committee to explore a presidential bid in 2008, saying the Republican field lacked a “committed conservative” capable of making a credible campaign for the White House.

“A void exists,” Mr. Gilmore said in an interview. “There is just no conservative right now who can mount a national campaign.”

Taking a shot at Mitt Romney, he says

“I am not someone who has to evolve as a conservative. I don’t have to evolve my position,” link to story
